Clinical Considerations in Geriatric Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

Clinical Considerations in Geriatric Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

  Contact Hours : 8 Hours

Course Description

This one-day course emphasizes key considerations applicable to the physical and occupational therapist in effectively managing the geriatric patient with multiple chronic cardiopulmonary diseases. The course accentuates specific management considerations for addressing the cardiac, pulmonary, vascular and metabolic issues in older adults. Medication management, examination and evaluation strategies, organized clinical decision making, evidenced-based contemporary treatment techniques and case examples will collectively provide the learner with a best practice approach for managing the unique cardiopulmonary needs of the geriatric patients. Specific considerations will be delineated for use along the spectrum of care from acute hospitalization to rehabilitation, home health and outpatient care.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the learner will:

  1. Create and incorporate an innovative approach for the examination of stability in patients with cardiopulmonary conditions.
  2. Integrate at least three contemporary treatment activities into a treatment session.
  3. Review the effects and uses of several categories of pharmacological interventions for patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction.
  4. Use functional assessment tools in the examination of endurance, strength and balance impairments in older patients with known cardiopulmonary conditions.
  5. Apply clinical pathophysiological considerations of the cardiac, pulmonary, vascular and endocrine systems within case examples for patients across the continuum of care.
